How to sell your car online in Buffalo
The process takes three steps, and only the last one happens in person.
Tell us about the car
Start on our website with the VIN, the mileage and a few photos. We use that information to see the vehicle as it is.
Get your offer
It’s free, there’s no obligation, and it’s good for 7 days or 300 miles.
We pick it up
Anywhere in the city or its suburbs, usually the same day or the next. Sign the paperwork and get paid at pickup.
What information we ask for
An offer is only as good as the information behind it. The more accurate yours is, the more reliable the number. Online, we ask for:
- The VIN (vehicle identification number), from your registration or the driver’s side of the dashboard
- The year, make, model and trim
- The mileage on the odometer
- How it runs, and any dents, damage or rust
- Photos of your car, so we can confirm its condition
How we work out the value
Your offer is what your car is worth to us as it is today. You don’t need to clean it up or fix it first.
Its value comes down to the information you give us: what it is, how far it’s been driven, how it runs and looks, and any rust or damage your photos show.
It stays good for 7 days or 300 miles, so you have time to get a second opinion on its value before you decide.
Selling to us, a dealership or a private buyer
You have options. Each one works; they just ask different things of you.
Sell it to us
We’re a car-buying service. Share the details on our website for a free offer. Pickup is free, we walk you through signing the title, and you’re paid on the spot.
Trade it in
Convenient if you’re buying your next car from the same dealership. The trade-in value goes toward that purchase as credit, so it only helps if you’re buying, and you haggle over both cars at once.
Sell it privately
A private-party sale lets you set the price. You also take the photos, write the ad, answer messages and arrange test drives with strangers, then handle the title, a bill of sale (MV-912) and the sales tax form (DTF-802) yourself.
Whichever you choose, it pays to compare a few offers. Ours is free, so it’s an easy one to have in hand. Compare every way to sell your car
Buffalo winters and rust
Road salt keeps Buffalo’s roads open all winter, and it’s hard on a vehicle’s underside. Rust is part of what we look at, so show it upfront.
Clear photos of it now mean no surprises at pickup.
Photos that help
- All four sides, in daylight
- The rocker panels below the doors
- The wheel wells
- The dashboard with the engine running, so the mileage and any warning lights show
- Any rust or damage, up close
The paperwork at pickup
New York has its own rules for selling, from the title to your plates. Here’s what to have ready, and what to do before and after we arrive.
Have ready
- The title, in your name, with no loans or liens on it
- A government-issued photo ID
- Every key and remote
Before we arrive
- Leave the title blank. We walk you through signing it at pickup, so there’s nothing to cross out.
- Take anything personal out of the vehicle: check the glove box, the trunk and under the seats.
- Remove your E-ZPass tag, unpair your phone and clear the garage door opener.
- Take off your plates and the windshield registration sticker.
After the sale
- Move the plates to another vehicle you own, or turn them in to the DMV with form PD-7.
- Turn the plates in before you cancel your insurance, or New York can suspend your registration and your license.
Questions about the process.
The questions sellers ask us most.
Do you pick up in the suburbs?
Yes. We pick up anywhere in Buffalo and its suburbs, from Amherst and Cheektowaga to Hamburg and Orchard Park.
How fast can you pick up my car?
Usually the same day or the next. You choose a time that works for you.
How long is my offer good for?
For 7 days or 300 miles. That gives you time to compare it with other offers before you decide.
Can I keep driving it after I get an offer?
Yes. The offer is good for up to 300 miles, so keep the driving light until pickup.
Does rust affect my offer?
Rust is common on cars in Western New York, and it’s part of what we look at. Show it in your photos, and it’s priced in from the start.
What kinds of vehicles do you buy?
Cars, trucks, SUVs and vans, including older ones and ones with plenty of miles.
Can I sell a car I still owe money on?
Not while there’s a loan on the vehicle. We need a title with no liens, so any loan has to be paid off and the lien released first. Your lender can tell you the payoff amount.
What if I can’t find my title?
Order a duplicate from the New York DMV with form MV-902. It costs $20 and is mailed to you, so allow time for it to arrive before pickup.
Where do I find the VIN?
On your registration or insurance card, or on the driver’s side of the dashboard, where you can read it through the windshield.
Do I need to be there at pickup?
You, or someone you authorize, needs to be there to hand over the keys and sign. We’ll confirm the details when we schedule your pickup.
I’ve never sold a car. Is this complicated?
No, and you don’t need any experience. We walk you through each step, from the first photo to signing the title at pickup.
What do I do with my plates?
In New York, the plates are yours. Take them off before pickup, then move them to another vehicle you own or turn them in to the DMV. Turn them in before you cancel your insurance.
Does it cost anything?
No. The offer and the pickup are free, and you don’t have to accept.
Is your office in Buffalo?
Our Western New York office is in Dunkirk. Our pickup service comes to you anywhere in the Buffalo area, so you never have to drive anywhere.
When do I get paid?
At pickup. Sign the title, hand over the keys, and get paid on the spot.
