How to sell your car online in Rochester
Three steps. The first two happen online, and the last one happens wherever the car is parked.
Send us the details
Enter the VIN and mileage on our website and add a few photos. That information shows us the vehicle as it really is.
Review your offer
It’s free and good for 7 days or 300 miles. Take it or leave it: there’s no obligation.
We collect the car
From your driveway or your lot, anywhere in the city or its suburbs, usually the same day or the next. Sign the paperwork, hand over the keys, get paid.
The information behind your offer
Your offer is built from what you tell us, so accuracy pays: the closer your description is to the car, the more reliable the number. We ask for:
- The VIN (vehicle identification number), printed on your registration and on the driver’s side of the dashboard
- Year, make, model and trim
- The current mileage
- How it drives, plus any dents, damage or rust
- A few photos of your car, so we can confirm its condition
What sets the value
The offer is what your car is worth to us today, as it sits. There’s no need to clean it, detail it or repair it first.
Its value depends on the information you share: what it is, its mileage, how it runs and looks, and any rust or damage your photos show.
You have 7 days or 300 miles to decide, which is time enough to get a second opinion on its value.
Us, a dealership or a private buyer
You have choices. Each one gets the car sold; they just ask different things of you.
Sell it to us
We’re a car-buying service. Send the details through our website for a free offer. Pickup costs nothing, we walk you through the title, and you’re paid when we collect the car.
Trade it in
Handy if your next car comes from the same dealership. The trade-in value becomes credit toward that purchase, so it helps only if you’re buying, and both cars get negotiated at once.
Sell it privately
A private-party sale lets you name the price. In return, you list the car, field messages and set up test drives with strangers, then complete the title, a bill of sale (MV-912) and the sales tax form (DTF-802) on your own.
Whichever way you go, compare a few offers. Ours costs nothing, so it’s an easy one to collect. Compare every way to sell your car

Lake-effect winters and rust
Rochester sits on Lake Ontario, and its winters bring lake-effect snow and plenty of road salt. Salt is hard on a vehicle’s underside, so rust is one of the first things we look at.
Show it in your photos now, and there’s nothing new to find at pickup.
Photos that help
- Each side of the car, in daylight
- Along the rocker panels, under the doors
- Inside the wheel wells
- The dashboard with the engine on, so the mileage and any warning lights show
- Close-ups of any rust or damage
Paperwork and plates
New York sets its own rules for sellers, from the title to the plates. Here’s what to have ready, and what to do on either side of pickup.
Have ready
- Your title, in your name, with no loans or liens on it
- A government-issued photo ID
- All the keys and remotes
Before we arrive
- Don’t fill in the title. We walk you through it at pickup, so there’s nothing to cross out.
- Clear out anything personal: the glove box, the trunk, under the seats.
- Take off your E-ZPass tag, unpair your phone and clear the garage door opener.
- Remove your plates and the registration sticker from the windshield.
After the sale
- Move the plates to another vehicle you own, or turn them in.
- In Monroe County, the County Clerk takes plates at its drop boxes or by mail, for a $1 fee, and mails you the receipt.
- Turn the plates in before you cancel your insurance, or New York can suspend your registration and your license.
Questions about selling in Rochester.
What sellers around Rochester ask us most.
Which towns do you cover?
Rochester and all of its suburbs, from Greece and Irondequoit to Henrietta, Pittsford and Webster.
How soon can you pick up?
Usually the same day or the next, at a time you choose.
How long does my offer last?
For 7 days or 300 miles, so there’s no rush to decide.
Will rust lower my offer?
Rust is common on cars that have been through Rochester winters, and it’s part of what we look at. Photograph it, and it’s factored in from the start.
Do you buy SUVs and trucks?
Yes. We buy cars, trucks, SUVs and vans, older and high-mileage ones included.
Can I sell a car that still has a loan on it?
Not until it’s paid off. We need a title with no liens, so any loan has to be cleared and the lien released first.
What if I’ve lost my title?
Order a duplicate from the New York DMV with form MV-902. It costs $20 and comes by mail, so order it before you schedule pickup.
Does someone need to be there at pickup?
Yes. You, or someone you authorize, needs to be there to hand over the keys and sign.
What happens to my plates?
They stay with you. Take them off before pickup, then move them to another vehicle you own or turn them in, before you cancel your insurance.
Is there a fee?
No. The offer and the pickup are free, and you’re never obligated to accept.
Do you have an office in Rochester?
Our Western New York office is in Dunkirk. We come to you anywhere around Rochester, so you never have to bring the car to us.
When am I paid?
At pickup, once the title is signed and the keys are handed over.
